Avani Betta Trek is a great way to explore the rich history and culture of Karnataka. Avani Betta, also known as Valmiki Parvatha, is a hill that is associated with many legends from the Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic.
Mythology, Avani Betta was the home of sage Valmiki, who composed the Ramayana and sheltered Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, when she was exiled. Sita gave birth to her twin sons, Lava and Kusha, on this hill and raised them under the guidance of Valmiki. The hill also witnessed the battle between Rama and his sons, who did not recognize each other at first.
Avani Betta History
Avani Betta was the home of sage Valmiki, who composed the Ramayana and sheltered Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, when she was exiled. Sita gave birth to her twin sons, Lava and Kusha, on this hill and raised them under the guidance of Valmiki.
Hill also witnessed the battle between Rama and his sons, who did not recognize each other at first. The hill is dotted with several temples that date back to the 10th century, built by the Nolamba dynasty and later renovated by the Cholas and the Vijayanagara empire.
Temples are dedicated to various deities, such as Ramalingeshwara, Lakshmanalingeshwara, Bharatalingeshwara, Shatrughnalingeshwara, Parvati, Hanuman, Valli, Sugreeva and Jambava. The temples are known for their intricate carvings and architectural beauty.
Avani Betta Timings
Hill is open from 6 am to 6 pm. Trek to the top of the hill takes about 2 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level. The trek is relatively easy, as there are stone steps carved along the way. Trek offers scenic views of the surrounding countryside and the Kolar district.
Main attraction at the summit is the Sita temple, where Sita is believed to have lived and given birth to her sons. Temple is also known as Sita Parvati temple, as it is said that Sita attained the status of Parvati, the consort of Shiva, after performing penance here.
Temple is visited by many pilgrims, especially childless couples, who seek the blessings of Sita. There are also other places of interest on the hill, such as the Valmiki ashram, the Lava-Kusha birthplace, the Rama-Sita meeting place and the Rama-Lava-Kusha war place.

Hill has an elevation of about 600 meters above sea level. Hill is part of the Deccan Plateau, which is composed of granite rocks and laterite soil. Hill has a rich flora and fauna, with many species of trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, birds, insects and reptiles. Also home to some rare and endangered animals, such as the sloth bear, the leopard, the pangolin and the Indian rock python.
